Cellular Jail Cellular Jail is a national memorial of great historical significance for India and touts to be the most prominent tourist spot in Andamans. Built by the Britishers during their colonial rule in India, especially to exile political prisoners, Cellular jail was where the inmates were subject to punishments and atrocities at the hands of the British soldiers. The construction of the present structure of the cellular jail went on from 1896 to 1906. Nevertheless, the British officers had been using the prison as an exile for prisoners from the late 1950s. Once known as Kala Pani, the jail was used by the British for deporting political prisoners from India. The architectural style of this jail is cellular.
